Has something like this ever happened to you?
You pick up your phone just to check one thing and ahhhh, 27 minutes disappear!
You were doing okay before, but now you feel distracted, or anxious, or maybe you even feel like something is missing.
Why does something as tiny as a screen have so much power over our emotions - happy one minute, insecure the next?
Scrolling doesn’t just fill our time. It also takes up space in our hearts and minds.
And guess what? God actually cares about that. He’s not against phones.
He’s for our hearts. And He tells us to take care of our hearts.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23
Ruth, our girl of the month, totally got this. She didn’t follow what was easy or popular. She stayed loyal to what was right. Ruth didn’t let culture influence her choices; she let character shape them. I think that’s why Ruth has always stood out to me because she chose loyalty when walking away would’ve been easier.
That’s the same energy we need online.
Here are three ways to keep your soul safe when you scroll.
1. Guard Your Eyes
What we see really does shape what we believe about the world and people. Our feeds are full of things … funny moments and inspiring stories. They also have things that make us compare ourselves to others, gossip, and lies about the kind of person we should be. When we spend a lot of time online, our mind starts to think that getting likes means we are loved and having followers means we are worthy. Let’s turn that around.
Before you scroll, ask yourself:
If Jesus was sitting next to me, would I still watch this thing? Would I still like it? Follow it?
I think about this a lot. If Jesus was beside me, would I still be interested in this thing?
He’s not judging your feed. He just wants to protect your focus.
Soul Check Challenge:
Take a look at the people you are following on social media. If there are accounts that make you feel bad about yourself or make you feel jealous or distract you from what's important, then it is a good idea to stop following them. I had to unfollow someone this week, and it surprised me how much peace it gave me.
And then, you can use that space for something else. Follow an account that sends you a verse from the Bible every day or follow your favorite worship artist. Follow things that will help you and make you feel better, not worse.
2. Guard Your Heart
Your heart is a special place and yet, the comment sections, streaks, and stories can sneak in and start causing trouble. They can make you feel bad about yourself or make you worry about what other people think.
Suddenly, you’re overthinking everything - a text, what someone else posted, or wondering if you’re “enough.”
Ruth teaches us something pretty cool here: she chose whose voice she would follow.
She stayed loyal to Naomi and to God, even when it didn’t make sense to anyone else.
That’s what guarding your heart looks like online too. Do you want to listen to the people who make you feel good about yourself or the people who make you feel bad about yourself? You get to choose which voices get amplified in your life - the ones that lift you up or the ones that tear you down.
Soul Check Challenge:
Before you post or comment, stop for a moment and say a prayer:
Does this reflect love and who I want to be, or am I just reacting to emotion?
If it’s not love, it’s not worth posting. God always wants us to do better and be better.
3. Guard Your Time
This is very important because time is something that we can never get back. God gave us this one wild, beautiful life. And it’s too precious to be lived inside an endless scroll. The more hours we give to screens, the less time we have for what actually fills our lives with meaning, such as laughter, friendship, prayer, and our life’s
purpose.
Soul Check Challenge:
Try a Soul Scroll Sabbath. One day a week, put your phone down and step away from the feed. Get some fresh air. Take a few minutes to write down your thoughts and feelings. Read Ruth’s story – it’s really interesting. Do something that fills your heart and mind.
Real Talk
You don’t have to delete every app or disappear from the digital world to protect your soul.
You really just have to invite God into it.
Because when your heart is guarded, your light shines even brighter … yes, even through a screen.
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16
Mini Prayer:
“Lord, help me guard my eyes, my heart, and my time. Let what I see, feel, and do online reflect Your love. Amen.”
FR takeaway:
Let’s be girls who glow for God, not for the algorithm.
