Have you ever said, “Ugh… I’m so bored,” even when you had plenty of things around you? Same. It’s such a weird feeling—like nothing sounds fun, even when you have options everywhere! So, here’s a question: what if boredom isn’t just something to escape… what if it’s something God can actually use? Let’s explore that together.
What the Bible Says? The Bible doesn’t use the exact word “boredom,” but it talks a lot about how we spend our time. In Ephesians 5:16, we’re reminded to “make the most of every opportunity.” That doesn’t mean being busy every second—it means living with purpose.
God also gently warns us about staying stuck in idleness. Proverbs 19:15 says laziness can make us feel stuck and sleepy in life, while Philippians 4:11 reminds us that true contentment doesn’t come from constant entertainment—it comes from God. This isn’t about feeling guilty for watching a show or relaxing. It’s about being aware of how we’re spending our time—and what our hearts might really need.
Why Does Boredom Even Exist? Believe it or not, boredom can be a gift. Before endless screens and notifications, there were more quiet moments built into life—washing dishes, staring out car windows, or just sitting still. And in those moments? Their minds could wander, dream, and create. Some of the best inventions came out of these moments! When we’re always consuming (scrolling, watching, clicking), we don’t leave much space to:
Be creative
Process our feelings
Talk and listen to God
Have you ever heard this? Prayer is talking to God… and quiet time is listening. But it’s hard to listen if our minds are always full of noise!
The Truth About Quiet Moments... Let’s be real: being still can feel super uncomfortable at first. Maybe your mind starts racing. Maybe you feel restless. Maybe you suddenly notice feelings you were trying to ignore. That’s okay. Those moments aren’t something to run from—they are where growth begins. When we slow down, we get to know ourselves better… and we make space to get closer to God. And here’s the cool part: If you can handle boredom, you can handle a lot of other hard feelings too!
Try This: Your “Boredom Breakthrough” Plan... Next time boredom shows up, instead of groaning… try one of these: First: Pause & notice. Before grabbing your phone, the TV remote or food, ask yourself: What am I really feeling right now? Second: Flip the script! Instead of thinking “This is the worst,” try: What could I do with this moment? Third: Make a “Boredom Menu.” Create a fun list before you’re bored! Include things like:
Reading a new book
Drawing or painting
Baking something yummy
Going for a walk
Playing with your sibling
Journaling your thoughts
Praying or sitting quietly with God
The list is limitless… Make it fun by numbering them and roll dice to choose!
Fourth: Grow your quiet time. Start small. Maybe just 2 minutes of stillness. Over time, you might start to love those peaceful moments with God.
A Summer Invitation... This summer, boredom might pop up more than usual—and that’s not a bad thing. What if those moments are little invitations from God? A chance to slow down. To get creative. To discover who you are. And to spend time with the One who created you... So, the next time you think, “I’m bored…” Try asking... “God, what do You have for me right now?” You might be surprised by what happens next!
