Sometimes the Gift Becomes the Growth

Blessing Today, Burden Tomorrow

Heavy doesn’t always mean wrong. Sometimes it simply means you’re carrying something valuable.

Remember when you begged your mom for a puppy? Like... “PLEASE. I will literally walk it every day. Feed it. Bathe it. Brush it. Train it. Love it. I will NEVER complain.” Fast forward three months. It’s 6:42 a.m. It’s snowing. The puppy is staring at you with the same face that convinced your parents to say yes... except now he needs to pee. Suddenly your “greatest blessing ever” feels suspiciously like a full-time job. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

We laugh because it’s true. The things we dream about eventually start asking something of us. The puppy needs walked. The driver’s license comes with insurance. The varsity team comes with two-hour practices. The phone comes with responsibility. The friendships you’ve always wanted suddenly require forgiveness, patience, and showing up when it’s hard. Somewhere between receiving the blessing and learning to carry it, the excitement fades... and responsibility quietly moves in.

We do this with everything. We pray for the volleyball team. Then practices are exhausting. We pray for the boyfriend. Then relationships get complicated. We pray for more friends. Then we’re trying to keep everyone happy. We pray to make the musical. Then rehearsals eat every evening. We pray for a driver’s license. Then we have to buy gas. (Why is gas approximately one million dollars?!) Sometimes we pray so hard for something that we completely forget one tiny detail: every blessing comes with responsibility. Not because God is trying to trick us. Because blessings were never meant to stop with being received. They’re meant to be stewarded—that’s different. It’s really easy to thank God when He gives us what we wanted. It’s a little harder to keep thanking Him when what we wanted starts asking something of us. When the new friendships require forgiveness. When the leadership position requires courage. When the answered prayer requires consistency. When the opportunity requires sacrifice. When the dream requires discipline. Sometimes yesterday’s answered prayer quietly becomes today’s assignment. And that’s not evidence God made a mistake. It’s evidence the gift was always meant to grow you.

We often assume blessings are God’s finish line, when many times they’re actually God’s starting line. He doesn’t just give gifts because He loves seeing us happy—although He absolutely delights in His children. He also gives gifts because He loves making us holy. Sometimes the very thing you prayed for becomes the classroom where God teaches you faithfulness, perseverance, humility, courage, and dependence on Him.

The Bible is full of people who experienced this. Moses prayed for God to be with him. Then he had to lead an entire nation through the wilderness. Esther became queen. Sounds glamorous... until courage meant risking her life to save God’s people. Peter wanted to follow Jesus. The following meant leaving comfort behind. David was anointed king long before he ever wore a crown, and in between came caves, battles, waiting, and trusting. The blessing never disappeared. The responsibility simply became visible.

We often imagine God’s gifts looking like confetti. But sometimes they look more like work boots. Because the same God who gives good gifts also calls us to grow through them. That’s why our faith can’t become transactional. Transactional faith says, “If God gives me what I asked for, then He’s good.” But mature faith says, “Because God is good, I will trust Him with whatever He gives me.” Those are two completely different ways to live. One is built on circumstances. The other is built on God’s unchanging character. One worships the gift. The other worships the Giver. That’s the kind of faith that stands when life gets heavier than expected.

“If God gives me what I asked for... He’s good. If it gets hard... maybe I missed His will.” Nope. Sometimes the hard part is exactly where His will begins! Jesus never promised that His gifts would always feel easy. He promised He would always be with us. “Be strong and courageous... for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Notice what God didn’t say. He didn’t say, “Be courageous because life will stay comfortable.” He said, “Be courageous because I am with you.” That’s a huge difference.

Maybe your blessing right now feels a little heavy. Maybe the friendship you prayed for suddenly requires hard conversations. Maybe the team you dreamed of making feels overwhelming. Maybe the influence you wanted comes with pressure you didn’t expect. Maybe growing up itself feels heavier than you imagined. Don’t panic. Heavy doesn’t always mean wrong. Sometimes it simply means you’re carrying something valuable.

Fall is funny like that. Trees don’t panic when their leaves become too heavy to hold. They let go of what was only meant for one season... so they can survive the next. Maybe courage this fall isn’t asking God for something new. Maybe it's faithfully carrying what He's already given you for this season. Because sometimes the blessing was never just the answered prayer. Sometimes the blessing was the girl God was quietly creating while you learned to carry it.

Years from now, you may not even remember every prayer God answered exactly the way you hoped. But you’ll remember who you became because He answered it. You’ll remember the courage He built. The faith He deepened. The dependence He grew. His greatest gifts have never simply been what He places in your hands—they’ve always included what He’s shaping in your heart. And honestly? That kind of blessing never goes out of season!
